An Old Love Revisited

When I ran into you today,
my heart did the old flop
that it always does.
A reminder that once upon a time,
you were my world.
When you said you were engaged,
my mind went numb.
A little corner of my heart
whispered,
"That could have been you."
The slamming of that door
made me wince inside.
Of course,
you were never mine,
although my heart claimed you
for years without a word spoken.
Hard to believe after four years
of forgetting you
seeing you would give
me that old yearning.
Old dreams die hard.
I'm too much of a coward
to open that unexplored avenue.
I suppose you'll never really know
how much I cared for you,
for my first love.
